The City of Calgary has shared information about proposed improvements for the intersection of McKnight Boulevard and 68 Street NE.
McKnight Boulevard is one of Calgary’s key east-west routes. With growth in northeast Calgary, commercial development, and traffic connected to the Calgary International Airport and Stoney Trail, the area has seen increasing traffic volumes. According to the City’s memo, McKnight Boulevard now serves more than 40,000 vehicles per day.
The intersection at McKnight Boulevard and 68 Street NE has become a known congestion point, especially for vehicles turning left toward Stoney Trail. The City notes that southbound and westbound left-turn movements are particularly busy, leading to delays and safety concerns from residents and businesses.
What Is Being Proposed?
The proposed improvements would add dual left-turn movements in the southbound, northbound, and westbound directions at the intersection.
The City expects these changes to reduce intersection delay and congestion by more than 30%. Southbound and westbound left-turn traffic queues are expected to decrease by more than 50%.
Construction Timeline
Construction is expected to begin in Summer 2026 with underground utility and traffic signal work at the intersection. The dual left-turn lanes are expected to be completed and opened to traffic in 2027.
